“I was a dick earlier. I’m sorry,” Jonny said, kicking dirty snow into the gutter with his expensive loafers as they waited for the taxi to pick them up and take them to the warehouse that wasn’t really a warehouse.

Everyone else had headed home.

“Jess thinks you’re jealous.” David needed to sort this out, and he didn’t really know how to approach the subject without being blunt about it. He hoped Jonny being Jonny would appreciate that.

“Did the two of you… I mean when he came back from break his hair was all over the place and he reeked of sex, and I saw you sneak in the back door about twenty seconds after him, so I assumed…”

“I like him.” A lot.

“And he likes you.” Jonny stared down the street.

David half wished the taxi would appear and save them from this conversation, but at the same time this conversation needed to happen.

“We hooked up,” David said, using Jess’s words. “That’s all.”

And tomorrow we’ll say goodbye, and that will be that. Four days ago above the underpass, he’d had the exact same thought. He’d just managed to delay the inevitable a little.

“How come you never told me you were gay? Or, you know, into guys?” he added, imagining Jess frowning at him.

For a while Jonny didn’t answer, and fed up of having no clue to what he was thinking, David touched his shoulder, willing him to turn.

“Why should I? Why do I have to tell anyone? I mean…” Jonny met his gaze and sighed heavily. “Someone’s gender doesn’t matter to me. The only thing that matters is whether or not I like them. What if I don’t want to have to explain that to everyone I meet?”

“You’re right, you don’t have to.” David felt like an idiot.

“I wasn’t attracted to you at first. That wasn’t why I came and sat down next to you that first day at uni. Honestly, you really were the least weird-looking dude in the place.”

David smiled as he thought of their odd bunch of course mates. But then David had always kind of liked weird.

Jonny continued. “I thought you’d be boringly normal, and you sort of were at first, but then you got under my skin, you know? You’re kind and sweet, and everything charms you because you pay attention to all the details, and your shyness is so fucking endearing.” With a frustrated expression, Jonny ran his hand through his hair, tugging at it as if he wanted to pull the strands from his head. “I didn’t want to fall for you! I told myself I hadn’t. But when you saw Jess the other night, I could almost feel how much you wanted him. You should see you two together. Fucking sparkles. You can’t hide it, either of you. And I hated it, so I was a complete bitch about it. I wanted you to want me. But I knew you didn’t, and you won’t. And now, do you know what the really fucking ridiculous thing is? I feel really bad about all this, and I just want you to be happy.
